How can physical therapy treat neurological conditions?

Neurological therapy (physical therapy for neurological conditions) is a safe and non-invasive treatment method that analyzes brain activity in order to determine how it can be changed to help improve your function. Neurological therapy can assist with determining the areas that need work. Physical therapy helps improve those areas.

With neuro therapy, an EEG is used to measure brain activity and create “brain maps.” Physical therapists and neurological therapists often work closely together in order to create the best treatment plan possible for each patient.

If you decided to see a physical therapist for treatment following a neurological injury, you can improve your function, perform targeted activities, and regain your independence much faster than you would without therapy! Physical therapists specializing in neurology work with patients who have a wide range of neurological disorders, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke
  • ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
  • Multiple sclerosis

Common Neurological Conditions

Multiple Sclerosis

Common symptoms of multiple sclerosis include pain, fatigue, and weakness. Fortunately, physical therapy can help manage and decrease these symptoms. Our Mililani and Kailua physical therapists will teach and guide you through targeted stretches to ease muscle spasms and special exercises to increase strength and range of motion while in the water or on land.

You will also work on activities to help improve your balance and movement, in addition to being provided with information on the correct use of assistive devices.

Stroke

Did you know that strokes are a leading cause of disability in adults? Moon Physical Therapy can help relieve the debilitating effects of a stroke by working to improve balance and walking through exercises in the water or on land, manual therapy, and the use of assistive devices.

Aquatic therapy for stroke patients is an excellent way for patients to relearn physical skills without placing undue stress on their bodies. The warm water helps relax rigid or spastic muscles and the buoyancy provides a safe place for balance training. Not only do patients get a good workout in the water, but they also feel an increased level of confidence due to achieving goals that they would not normally be able to achieve on land.

Other common therapies for post-stroke rehabilitation include functional electrical stimulation, constraint-induced movement therapy, partial body weight support, motor image, and neuro-therapy techniques, such as biofeedback.

Biofeedback is a type of neurological therapy that helps improve awareness of muscle function and how it might need to be adjusted. This is done by attaching electrodes to the skin in order to measure muscle activity on a screen.

If you suffer from a stroke, it’s important that you get into the correct form of rehabilitation. Our Mililani and Kailua physical therapist can help you regain your functional skills so you can get back to living your life independently.

ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, is a progressive, neurological disease. It typically develops in the hand, feet, and extremities before progressing to the central part of the body.

At this point in time, there is no cure for ALS. However, here at Moon Physical Therapy the goal of our rehabilitative team is to help you maintain physical function and independence for as long as you possibly can.

Our team focuses on preventing secondary complications (such as injuries caused by falling) by providing education and guidance for safety, and adaptation when using assistive devices.

Patients who develop ALS first notice a challenge with walking, as they may frequently trip or lose their balance. They will also notice frequent muscle cramps or weakness in their hands or legs.

As ALS gets worse and progresses throughout the body, it can affect the way in which someone walks, speaks, uses their extremities, swallows, and even breathes.

Our physical therapists at Moon Physical Therapy are trained to be able to recommend adaptive equipment, such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs, braces, and other devices to aid patients with ALS. We will do our very best to accommodate every aspect of your condition in order to provide you with the best possible amount of function & mobility.

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive, neurological disorder that affects the nerve cells in the brain. Common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include irregular facial expressions, slurred speech, and severe tremors.

Aquatic and land-based physical therapy at our Mililani and Kailua clinics can help slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease while also providing relief for pain symptoms. It also helps to improve flexibility and strength by addressing several issues that Parkinson’s disease may cause, including freezing, dystonia, and abnormal gait.

Warm water has unique properties that help symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. When someone with Parkinson’s is able to float and move in water, they feel so much freer than on land. Patients can stand up tall, with increased truck extension and move more freely. Water can also assist with tremors, and gait and balance issues.
